A Worthy Honor

Selina Steinfeld, a Romanian Jewish lady, experienced both massacres and roundups of Jewish people during World War 2. Following the war she immigrated to Israel in 1948, where she married, raised three children, had seven grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

She, along with nine other women, were selected to see who would be chosen as this year’s Miss Holocaust Survivor. Put on hold since 2018 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the contest returned this year.

Sponsored by Yad Ezer L’Haver, ‘Helping Hand,’ it intends “to bring members of Israel’s rapidly dwindling Holocaust survivors some joy and recognition.”

The ten contestants received well deserved pampering and attention for the event as professional makeup artists, hairdressers, and stylists prepared them for the evening. In addition, local celebrities, including Miss Israel Noa Kochba, served as judges and entertained the audience.

Selina won the honor for this year’s contest of Miss Holocaust Survivor. She remarked, “I have no words to express my happiness. I hope to be able to lead the people of Israel to beauty and goodness.”

With 175,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel, Executive Director Shimon Sabag’s comments are precious; “These amazing women, Holocaust survivors, are in their twilight years and will not be with us much longer. Holocaust survivors are the true heroines of us all, and thanks to them we are here today.”

Congratulations Selina, may you have many more years to achieve your aim of showing both beauty and goodness to Israel.
