Warning: Don’t Do It!
Some in England are expressing concern about the consequences of moving the British Embassy to Jerusalem. Prime Minister Liz Truss has called herself “a huge Zionist, a huge supporter of Israel, and pledged that she would take the UK-Israel relationship from strength to strength.”
She received agreement for her view from Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry as he declared “to support Israel in its fight to ensure that it remains safe and that the capital in Jerusalem is the home to our new embassy.”
However, not all leaders agree with placing the embassy in Jerusalem. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, voiced his opposition to such a move on Twitter, “Such a relocation would be seriously damaging to any possibility of lasting peace in the region and to the international reputation of the United Kingdom.” Citing Pope Francis and the churches in the Holy Land’s long held position “of an international Status Quo on Jerusalem to be upheld, in accordance with the relevant resolutions. The city must be shared as a common patrimony, never becoming the exclusive of any party.”
The Bible has much to say about the city of Jerusalem. I like this statement in Psalm 132:13-14, “For the LORD has chosen Zion (Jerusalem); He has desired it for His dwelling place; This is My dwelling place; this is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.” Often when there is talk about the status of Jerusalem, God is left out. The city belongs to Him, He is “the Great King” (Matthew 7:35; Psalm 48:1-2). The Cardinal and all opponents to Jerusalem being the recognized capital of Israel, would do well to remember that.
