Disaster! The Aftermath
Following the horrific disaster about ten days ago of Israel’s coastline being inundated with tar, covering nearly 100 miles of beaches, the cleanup has begun. “At Achziv beach in Northern Israel, from where you can see the Lebanese border, the sand doesn’t look too bad from a distance. But when you get up close, you see the tar is still everywhere-and that’s after more than a week during which volunteers have been cleaning up…Five of the ten tankers that were in the area to which the oil spill has been traced-some 31 miles offshore-are still under suspicion and investigation.”
“The Israel Nature and Parks Authority said Sunday that there was still much work to be done to clean tiny balls of tar off the sand along beaches within its jurisdiction, while the hardest work was removing contamination from the rocks…The INPA concluded that it would not be possible to completely rid the sand of tar. ‘Tiny particles will remain.’
A tragic, unexpected environmental disaster has one hopeful development: Israel’s National Sea Turtle Rescue Center has found mayonnaise to be a cure for eleven turtles so far. Medical Assistant Guy Igvy explains: “They came to us full of tar. All Their trachea from inside and outside was full of tar. We continue to feed them substances like mayonnaise, which practically clean the system and break down the tar.” Hopefully, within one to two weeks they will be released back into the wild.
Pray for the ongoing efforts to clean and repair the severe, extensive damage from this tragic event. A true Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, effort.
