Holiday Hostilities

After solemnly observing Memorial Day on Tuesday, Israel celebrates its Independence Day today, marking its 75th anniversary since its inception in 1948. But since Israel is in the midst of political and social turmoil, divisive actions are disrupting what should be a time of unity.

The controversial judicial reform proposal has sparked well-publicized protests since it was introduced in January. Politicians closely tied to the judicial reform, whether for or against, have been asked not to speak or even attend memorial services and ceremonies. Confrontations concerning political issues including the judicial reform have broken out among bereaved families at Beersheba’s military cemetery, bringing hostility to a site where people come to honor fallen loved ones.

Israel experiences this strange combination of sorrowful remembrance and joyful celebration each year, with Independence Day immediately following Memorial Day. How sad that this special week should be interrupted by disunity and political squabbles! This is a time for putting aside differences and celebrating the miraculous nation of Israel and the heroes who have given their lives defending it. While coming to a decision on the judicial reform and other political issues is in Israel’s best interest, its citizens must not forget the blessings they enjoy living in the Holy Land and the strength they have that comes from their common bonds.
