Iran Targets Israel With New Missile Name

Iran unveiled a new missile with a range of 900 miles today (9th), and its name suggests that Iran has the destruction of Israel in mind. The surface-to-surface missile is called “Khaybar Shekan,” referring to “an ancient Jewish oasis called Khaybar in the Arabian Peninsula’s Hijaz region that was overrun by Muslim warriors in the 7th century,” The Jerusalem Post reports. The long-range missile was domestically produced by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, able to penetrate military shields, as reported by Iranian state media. Its capabilities put Israel in range of the missile.

If nothing else, Iran is certainly bold. It has always been all too eager to test the limits of the nuclear deal meant to stop its attempt to develop a nuclear weapon. Not only does it continue to do this, but now it targets Israel by bringing to mind a historical Muslim victory in battle over the Jewish people in present-day Saudi Arabia. This feels a bit like writing the name of your enemy on your knuckles before you fistfight him—it’s an insult and a pointed threat. We can hope this overconfidence is a weakness that keeps Iran from effectively using the missile to cause damage in an attempted attack on Israel.
