Israel at War: Week 124

With the 2026 Winter Olympics complete, it’s fitting to recognize and applaud the achievements of Israeli/Jewish participants. Including the Israeli delegation, 16 Jewish athletes competed in this year’s games. Sadly, prior to the Games, the Israeli bobsled team had their European training residence (location unnamed for security purposes) vandalized and their passports stolen. One bobsled team leader said that along with their passports, thousands of dollars of equipment was taken. AJ Edelman, the driver for the team said following the incident, “How the team handled the day is just such a fine example of how we push through difficult circumstances. Such a gross violation- suitcases, shoes, equipment, passports stolen, and the boys headed right back to training today. I believe this team exemplifies the Israeli Spirit.” This was Israel’s first time competing in the bobsled competition.

Jewish speed skater Emery Lehman has received the title of “possibly the most decorated Jew in Winter Games history.” Upon hearing this he responded, “Right on, Let’s Go!” He won silver and bronze in two team events. Concerning competing as a Jewish athlete he said, “I’ve just been happy to represent the Jewish people.” Having gone to Israel on a Birthright trip he has a desire to return to Israel, this time with his mother, Marcia.

Finally, in the Gold Medal round of ice hockey, the United States and Canada faced off to see who would claim the desired prize. With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, 1:41 into overtime, American Jack Hughes fired a shot that went into the net earning the United States the 2-1 victory. In his post game comments he said, “This is all about our country right now. I love the United States, I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The USA hockey brotherhood. It is so strong. We had so much support from ex-players, and I’m proud to be an American today.”

Some significant achievements in the Winter Games from a maligned, hated, and persecuted people currently fighting a war for their survival. The Jewish and Israeli athletes indeed exemplify the Israeli spirit. They continue the battle until victory is won. To all anti-Semites and Israeli detractors we say, “The People of Israel LIVE!”
