Israel at War: Week 153
The adage “Politics makes strange bedfellows” can clearly be seen in the Middle East, especially regarding the negotiations with Iran and its proxies and allies. In his recent video, Avi Abelow focuses on the Iranian plan to assassinate President Trump and Israel’s discovery of the plot and its subsequent revelation to U.S. security officials. He examines the ramifications of both the discovery and the participants, including Recep Erdogan the head of the Turkish government.
He writes: “According to explosive reports emerging from Washington and Israeli media, Israel passed on intelligence information regarding an Iran assassination attempt in Ankara, Turkey.” The details sound like a fiction novel, but they included a possible surface to air missile threat, deception tactics to keep the President safe, and extremely vital intelligence from Israel regarding Turkey. “If Iranian intelligence possessed highly detailed information about President Trump’s movements-and if Israeli intelligence helped expose the threat- it highlights how closely American and Israeli security interests overlap in confronting common adversaries.”
He notes the unease Israelis have when they see and hear President Trump in an apparent warming relationship between himself and Turkey’s Erdogan. With Israel surrounded by nations and terror groups sworn to their destruction, he perceptively asks three questions, “Why does Israel continue warning the free world about the dangers posed by jihadist movements? Can governments who have supported Hamas be trusted to shape Gaza’s future? And what lessons should President Trump draw from this assassination plot as he shapes future Middle East policy?”
Past and present dealings with Israel’s enemies have shown that in the stormy, unsettled situation of the Middle East cauldron, the one stable and reliable ally is Israel. We pray that he will see this clearly and strengthen our ties with Israel.
