Messianic Ideas and the Messiah

What did the Jewish people of Jesus’ day believe about the Messiah? What Messianic preconceptions greeted Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God and the Messiah of Israel? Answering these questions is similar to answering the question, What do Christians believe about salvation? In other words, professing Christians may give many answers, depending on the brand of Christianity to which they belong.

Dr. William Varner is Professor of Bible and Greek at The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California. He also serves as Director of IBEX, the college’s overseas campus in Israel. He is the author of several books including "The Chariot of Israel" and "Jacob's Dozen."

  1. We didn’t need Josephus to tell us the Sadducees didn’t believe in angels and resurrection; it was recorded in the Bible by Matthew, Mark and Luke, Matthew 22:23, Mark 12:18 and Acts 23:6-9
