The Eternality and Pre-Existence of Christ

Eternality The subject of Christ’s eternality deals with the fact that He has always existed as a person from eternity past, with no beginning and no end. The Scriptures give at least three lines of evidence for this fact: direct biblical statements, the deity of Christ, and His role in creation. Direct Biblical Statements Four biblical passages clearly ascribe eternality to Christ. The

  1. Mk 13:6- Greek text lit reads “… many will come on the name of me saying that I AM and many they will deceive…”

ORIGIN- genesis, gennao, ginomai. The following renderings of these texts are backed up by the Greek-English Lexicons, certain Greek-English Interlinears and leading Greek scholars:

Matthew 1:1 KGV; “This is the record of the origin (Greek genesis) of Jesus the Messiah…”

Matthew 1:18 KGV; ”Now the origin (Greek genesis) of Jesus Christ was in this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant by holy spirit.”

John 18:37 KGV; ”I have been brought into existence (Greek from gennao) and have come into the world for this particular purpose”

This links the son’s beginning of existence with his “coming into the world”

Acts 13:33 KGV; ”… by raising Jesus up this is just as described in the second Psalm; “You are my son; today I have brought you into existence” (Greek from gennao)” From Psalm 2:7

Heb 1:5 KGV; “Indeed, to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my son, today I have brought you into existence (Greek from gennao)”

In quoting Psalm 2:7 both Acts 13:33 and Heb 1:5 show Jesus as having been brought into existence at a particular time- a particular today, which Matthew, Luke, John and Paul show to be when God miraculously fathered Jesus in Mary’s womb.

1 John 5:18 KGV; “… but the one (Jesus) who was fathered (the Greek aorist tense of gennao) by God, continues to keep them (each Christian) safe…”

This is a ONE TIME coming into existence of Jesus as shown by the use of the aorist tense and which Matt 1:1,18,20; Luke 1:35; John 1:13; Rom 1:3; and Gal 4:4; all show to be involving Mary.

Matt 1:20 KGV; “… for the child having been fathered (the Greek aorist tense of gennao) IN her (Mary) is by the Holy Spirit”

Luke 1:35 KGV; To Mary: “For this REASON the child BEING brought into existence (Greek from gennao) WILL be holy; he WILL be called son of God”

The scriptures teach that Yahweh is “bringing many sons to glory” (Heb. 2:10), not just one son:

John 1:12-13 KGV; “As many as did except him, He gave the right to become God’s children-to those giving their allegiance *to him who was brought into existence (the Gk aorist tense of gennao,) not by common processes nor by human choice nor by husbands decision, but of God”

*In harmony with Matthews and Luke’s Gospels, this rendering shows that John acknowledged Jesus’ coming into existence as God’s direct son through a virgin. The basis for this rendering is the 1920 German translation by Albrecht who’s notes state:

“I am following here in john 1:13 an extremely old reading found in Irenaeus and Tertullian, the singular verb “was begotten” referring to Jesus, not to believers, prevailed in text from the second to fourth century in the West, and left important traces in the East also. John confesses expressly here his belief in the virginal begetting and birth of Jesus, which Matthew and Luke describe in much more detail.”

Similarly, the Jerusalem Bible renders the verse as “him who was born not out of human stock or urge of the flesh or will of man but of God himself.” The New Jerusalem Bible reverts to the old reading but has provided a footnote on this issue.

So all these texts show that the generation / origin i.e. the being brought into existence, and the coming into existence of Jesus occurred IN Mary’s womb and ONLY IN Mary’s womb and therefore precluding any thought of a pre-existent PERSON who becomes Jesus.

    1. John 17:5
“And now Father, glorify me with thine glory that I shared with you BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN”.

Right from the Lord’s mouth. Sorry friend, dig deeper.
