Abuse of Power

The moment I saw Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on the neck of George Floyd as Floyd lay facedown, cuffed, and breathless, I knew something was wrong. I never make a final judgment on Internet videos that go viral because they always have backstories—except for this one. Usually, the men and women who patrol our streets serve our communities 24/7 and deserve ou

  1. Maybe leaning on his neck did not cause Mr. Floyd’s death but after repeated requests for help is when the officer that had his knee on his neck should of taken his knee off and helped him. I would not go so far to say it was intentional but certainly there was poor judgement on behalf of the police officer. Besides there were other rookie officers there that could’ve at least attempted to encouraged the police officer to take his knee off Mr. Floyd. I know everything happens real quick in situations like these but 8 minutes should be long enough
for the officer in charge to evaluate the situation to make a better solution to the problem. One isolated error in judgement is certainly no reason to create lawlessness by reacting the way and creating a mob did in the name of peaceful protest.

  2. My concern with this article is the backstory as you suggested in the article. I saw another video. It was from the policeman’s camcorder. It showed a violent man on drugs who was uncooperative. They repeatedly tried to help him, even attempting to get him to step to the sidewalk, out of traffic where he couldn’t be injured. The other people in the vehicle, his friends, attempted to reason with him. He was sitting on the sidewalk by himself yelling about not being able to breathe. He wouldn’t get in the police car, because he was claustrophobic. So the police offered to open the windows. The police even called for medical help. A person on drugs doesn’t act rationally. I saw no abuse from the policemen. They acted professionally. His friends repeatedly tried to get him to calm down and cooperate. As for the original video, well, perhaps this whole situation needs further study.

    1. I agree. Officers have used this method to restrain people in the past. We can’t make the assumption that leaning on his neck for eight minutes solely caused his death. That would imply the officer may have intentionally wanted to murder Mr. Floyd. Let’s not forget that Mr. Floyd also had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system which most likely along with his anxiety contributed much more to the cause of his death.

  3. We need to support Israel as they are God’s chosen people. However, I also believe that President Trump has been chosen by God as the man for the these Times. It could be that one of the reasons for God’s choice is that we can alert Israel to the dangers of a business relationship with China. As Christians we certainly need to pray for Israel that they will listen to the warning.
