Suicide on the Temple Mount
Jerusalem Police Chief Yair Yitzhaki confirmed recently that members of a Denver, Colorado-based doomsday cult have entered Israel. Their agenda, however, is reported to be anything but the usual tour of the Holy Land. Cult watchers have warned that members of the cult, calling themselves “Concerned Christians,” are believed to be planning a mass suicide on the Temple Mount to mark the millennium.
The leader of the cult, Monte Kim Miller, has said that he will die in Jerusalem in December 1999 and will be resurrected three days later. As many as 72 of Miller’s followers sold their belongings and left their homes in the United States before October 10, 1998, the day on which Miller predicted that the city of Denver would be destroyed by an earthquake.
Jerusalem police, who have established a special task force to prepare for the influx of pilgrims expected during the observance of the millennium, said the group does not appear to pose a threat at this time. They are, however, “keeping an eye on them.”
It goes without saying that such people, while calling themselves “Christians,” are in no way true followers of Christ. They are led by a deluded individual in the same way that gullible people followed cult leaders in Jonestown, Guyana, and Waco, Texas, and just as people were led to mass suicide in the Heaven’s Gate tragedy.
It remains a mystery to most of us how leaders of demonically driven suicide cults attract their victims. But, the fact is that time and time again they do, and the specter of death by deception is the fruit of their efforts.
Should these cultists succeed in committing suicide on the Temple Mount, or anywhere else in Jerusalem, it will mean much more than the death of another group of brainwashed fanatics. Such an act would place a pall over the commemoration of the singular grand event of human history—the reality of God’s stepping into time in the person of Jesus of Nazareth and altering the course of life on this planet. In fact, it would be a major triumph for the forces dedicated to discrediting Christ and Christianity. Satan would, of course, be overjoyed to see the attention shifted from Christ to hapless ploys and their demented leader.
Thus, we urge the Jerusalem police to “keep an eye” on Miller and his followers—and to use whatever means necessary to prevent them from any possible attempt to carry out such a dreadful scheme.
