A Letter to My Dad

It’s not easy to tell your parents they need Jesus. Another Father’s Day is just around the corner. My dad passed away in 2008; and at age 97, my mom still misses him. Perhaps that was why she showed me a Father’s Day letter that I wrote to him on my 40th birthday in 1993. I had forgotten about it, and she couldn’t remember why she kept it all these years but was pleased I was so happy to

  1. Steve, that was a great letter. I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home and now I can kind of see how difficult it must have been for you and your family. I hope all is well with you and your family and look forward to seeing you in Glory.
    Your friend,
    George (Crash)

  2. Thank you for sharing such a tender, personal glimpse into your family. God used your article to add to my “store of treasures”—ways He’s comforted me after my dad’s death last July. After my praying 35 years for him, he died with no indication of receiving Christ. I also had tried communicating with him as you did, but he resisted every attempt. Your letter was about as perfect as it could have been, and a beautiful example of honoring the Fifth Commandment. It is intensely painful to have the cure for sin when the patient doesn’t want to be healed. My biggest comfort has been that the two times Jesus is recorded as weeping were over the death of a loved one and over the fate of unrepentant sinners. You are right, God’s love hasn’t failed—He deeply feels all we experience. He can be trusted, even when it doesn’t make sense this side of eternity.

  3. Steve, This letter to your father is absolutely precious. My heart relates ever so much as I have witnessed over many years to my own father and up to his death 6 years ago at almost 90. I was the very last family member of many to see him and the only believer in my family who could pray over him. The night after last seeing him I prayed until 2:30 a.m.when the Lord nudged me to go to sleep until awakened at 5:30 by my mother saying your dad passed away at 2:30 a.m. We will know for sure about our fathers on the other side. Now I am praying for my dear 93 year old mother for whom I recently gave a beautiful Bible, a love letter and scripture references toward salvation. No clear response from her yet it is obvious that Bible on her coffee table is being used! So we continue to pray and trust God for our loved ones and others! Thank you for sharing your beautiful and loving letter, Steve! Good bless you!!!!
    In our Savior’s love,
    Carol

  4. I am a Jesus follower and have a son who is not. Your letter has inspired me to write him. What I will say, I don’t know, but I will cover my love for him and for God. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

    1. That letter fought tears to my eyes and please thank you mother for allowing you to share it. I don’t know if your dad ever accepted the Messiah but G-d definitely blessed you by giving you a wonderful father and I think he blessed him by giving him a wonderful, loving son.
